In addition to the simple performance of the music, there
are many subsidiary activities without which the tradition could not have
attained, and cannot sustain its present level of health.
The provision and repair of instruments, the creation and
circulation of new material, the facilitation of access to archive material, the
collection of unknown pieces or versions from older players, the broadcasting of
genuine traditional music - these are activities which are indispensable to the
health of the music.
To give one concrete example - the sound-producing parts of
the uilleann pipes are made out of Spanish cane. If suitable cane becomes
unavailable then the future of the instrument is
threatened.
