As recently posted on the NPU main page:
| Quote: | | NPU intends to offering intensive training in uilleann pipe making starting in autumn 2010. Facilities will include a fitted out workshop for purposes of training and demonstration. |
NPU have asked me to say a bit more about this project, and the ongoing PipeCraft initiative.
Thanks to generous grants from the Department of Tourism Culture and Sport, the Arts Council, and the Craft Council of Ireland, NPU expects to be in a position to offer hands-on training in pipemaking starting this fall.
The details of the site where training will take place are still being finalized - it will be in Dublin city. Equipment procurement has begun.
The plan is for facilities to be available for a variety of activities in support of pipemaking instruction - including an organized, modular course; demonstrations of specific pipemaking techniques by established pipemakers; seminars and pipemaking colloquia. Those persons who are interested in intensive pipemaking training should contact NPU and complete the online form located at: http://www.pipers.ie/interest.asp?Eventname=PIPEMAKER . The course is open to prospective and improving pipemakers around the world.
While it's understood that not everyone interested will be in a position to attend a 'residential' type course on short notice, it is hoped that a schedule can be arrived at that will benefit the maximum number of suitable participants this year. The hope is that any modules offered in the next 6 months would be repeated at some future time, but NPU does want to get things off the ground at the earliest opportunity.
The basic prerequisites for attendance will be a level of competency in the playing of the pipes, and some previous reedmaking experience. (It is possible that there will be some flexibility on this last point for experienced players who wish to concurrently avail of reedmaking instruction.)
At this time, the rota of instructors hasn't been finalized. They will of course be skilled and knowledgeable in the subject matter delivered.
The pipemaking video project is continuing, with an initial tranche of online material expected in a similar timeframe or sooner. This multimedia material will be an important supplement to the in-house hands-on training programme as well as being made available to members via the internet.
best regards,
Bill (on behalf of the NPU PipeCraft initiative) |

I can only make the highest recommendation for the NPU lectures and the up-coming hands-on class. Last year's lectures with Mr. Quinn and Mr. Haneman were outstanding, and I will attend more of these classes as soon as it is possible for me to do so.

To elaborate a little bit on the above announcement: the plan is to have workshop facilities that can be used by registered students, as well as for demonstrations and for hands-on direct training (one-on-one and otherwise).
It's my understanding that students may be eligible for up to 100% tuition support via EU "Leader+" funds, and that the Leader+ program could also provide support for graduates seeking to establish a workshop, by funding up to 75% of the capital equipment costs.
As well as providing a comprehensive pipemaking training program, the project aims to cater to pipemakers who are already making pipes but who are interested in honing and extending their skills... so even if you are not available for a residential course, or full-time study, NPU would like to hear from you.
best regards,
Bill |

News from 15 Henrietta Street:
| Quote: | "We are pleased to advise that we have recently taken a lease on a premises located at unit 44, Block 3, Port Tunnel Business Park, Clonshaugh, Dublin17 which will house the new NPU pipe-making training centre. We are currently in the process of fitting out the centre with the necessary equipment which will be finalised by mid November 2010. In late October we will be contacting everyone who has expressed an interest in the training programme in order to determine the skill levels of each person who has contacted us to date and the exact level of demand for training.
We are also pleased to advise that we will be launching an online digital pipemaking resource on the NPU website www.pipers.ie in the same timeframe which will include extensive video footage of expert pipemakers demonstrating key aspects of their craft - hundreds of clips and tens of hours in total.
Many thanks to all to have contacted NPU to date to register interest in the training." |
There has really been enormous progress on this project over the past few months, and things are rapidly coming together. Stay tuned for more information in the coming weeks.
